Here at redacted , we like cars with passion, emotions and character. There’s a word for that : Soul .
New cars are often soul-less , or even soul-sucking . Think about all these generic crossovers, all these leased vanilla BMWs or even worse, the whole Toyota lineup.
Fortunately, some automakers still have a passion for cars. Let’s have a look at ten new cars with soul.
10 - Mazda CX-3
9 - Mazda MX-5
8 - Fiat 500 Abarth
7 - Volvo XC90 T8
6 - Jaguar F-type
5 - Alfa-Romeo Gulia Quatrrogloiao verde
4 - Mazda 6
3 - Mazda 3 Hatchback
2 - Ford Fiesta ST
1 - Fiat 124 Spyder

Not enough Mazda on that list.

For #2....
Why not just nominate the two of them.
But still, the hooning passion is strong for both.

Hey now, the Pinto may’ve been RWD, but it was fully of firey passion in it’s heyday.

From what I’ve seen, you can always expect one or many of these cars to appear on his lists:
Any Mazda
Fiesta/Focus ST
Any Volvo

It wasn’t even true in the 70’s.

That I know, but he seems to suggest a mazda for everything. Not trying to bash him or shame him just. It was a real question, Like before I would plug the Suzuki SX4 everywhere I could, a little less now since I no longer own one.

Yeah I meant to include the trucks too, but was posting from my phone, because my work PC won’t let me post pics on Kinja, and didn’t want to download photos.

no, 70s. because there was nothing FWD drive in the 70s tht was fun to drive. 80s brought around some fun FWD. (3rd gen civics)

I like the list except for #10.
All CUVs are soulless money grabs.
Edit: I recognize their importance - make money. And, I will acknowledge that it appears to be nice than most, but with the higher center of gravity though I just see lift = profit instead of soul. To each their own I guess.

that’s because almost nothing was FWD in the 70s Gm really started with the X platform in 1980 So no mainstream car was FWD in the 70s other than VW in 1975 with the rabbit

This is pretty much in line with what I learn reading Jalopnik.

what do you drive if I may ask?
Jalopnik?, miata is the answer not mazda, unless the question is what rusts faster than it sells.

bonus points awarded for using another mazda as #1 without posting a mazda

I’d pull out the Mazda6. I own that car (wife’s daily driver), and while it’s a great looking and great handling sedan, it is woefully underpowered. In it’s place, I’d proffer the Jeep Wrangler.

That ungrateful little shit let me roll back into my garage door, we’ll just see if I ever let his fluids get changed.
Sadly I forgot my parking brake earlier this week, and my garage door hates me.

Say what? Classic Minis weren’t fun to drive? Golf GTI MK1 was boring? Citroën DS, CX, 2CV, GS and SM were all soulless shitboxes built without an ounce of passion?
What about the Alfasud? Or this little beauty:
Lancia Fulvia: So horribly dull and uninspring... Said no one, ever. Find a video of a Fulvia rally car, turn up the sound, listen to the narrow angle V4 engine, then tell me it’s boring.
I know there were a lot of bland FWD cars around. There still are. Forget them and remember the good ones.
![]() 12/10/2015 at 17:57 |

I was arguing tht yes, there are good FWD cars.
I just picked a random older time. totally forgot about the minis being made in tht era.
![]() 12/10/2015 at 18:04 |

I know, but you did say that there were no fun FWD cars in the 70’s, and as a fan of a marque that has almost exclusively made FWD cars since the 30’s I sort of disagreed :)
And there were way more than just the Mini (which was introduced as far back as 1959 by the way).

Yes, it’s to keep it right side up if it falls in the canal. It’ll then extend a snorkel and drive along the riverbed.

I want a used Abarth so badly. I have serious back issues though, so long term comfort with the seats has always been a big question mark.
Any thoughts on them for me?
![]() 12/14/2015 at 13:41 |

I find the seats themselves to be comfy but the driving position a bit off, especially the pedal placement, they are really high off the floor. Personally I wouldn’t want to do more than a hundred or so miles due to it, I have a Citroën DS4 for long journeys which is much more laid back and comfy on long motorway trips, plus it has cruise control which Euro 500’s don’t have, even as an option, it would improve it greatly if it did (plus it would help keep the little bitch at legal’ish motorway speeds a lot less of a chore!). I believe USDM ones do have cruise though. Your best bet is to find a dealer who will let you have one for a day or weekend and do a couple of hundred miles in it!
